Oak leaves
Autumn's gone
Far, once more gone:
The last colors fly in th’air-
With nightingales in beeches high
A single leaf among the rare
Scrolls, spins, twists and falls
Stumbling in the ground
Gathering the dry crowd
As gritting winter crawls
All whistles
White sounds and Christmas songs
No dirges, cold December is rather
Fireplaces to our eyes
‘Tis thaw to inner ice
It ain’t miming, it’s better
It’s a comet, twice and thrice
We see no fog
We’ve golden eyes
Between dark green
Fir, cedar, yew, branches so few
Swallows and geese soar
Together, in the sky.
Autumn’s gone
Hence forevermore’s it gone
I lift up from that bench so eagerly
Crossbows are down faithfully
‘Tis farewell to that bowed oak leaf
‘Twas the last one I stood to see
May it be carried as firewood
Nothing else misunderstood
For shelter’s sure, as hills that high
And gravel’s dust, great warmth is nigh!
